Storm Preparation

Don’t let this year’s storm season sneak up on you. Count on the Snohomish and Monroe Co-Op to have what you need to keep your homestead supplied during power outages, flooding, and snowfall. From heating fuels to pruning and mulching supplies, and livestock first aid products, we can help you stock up on what you need to weather the storm season comfortably.

Stock up on heating fuels like kerosene and propane. Both stores are well equipped to refill propane bottles. Both locations sell and fill new propane tanks so you can have an extra one on hand. Our Snohomish location stocks bulk kerosene, and both locations carry cans of kerosene. If you have a fireplace, our reliable Idaho and Home fire logs will keep your house warm even if the power goes out.

Visit our Snohomish store’s gas station to fuel up with Ethanol Free gas. Small engines like chainsaws needed to clear fallen trees, and generators to keep your house comfortable during power outages will run happier with Ethanol Free Fuel. Don’t worry if you forget to bring a gas can. We sell those as well.

Strong winter winds can break limbs and branches off trees. While fall is not the ideal time for pruning, removing long, thin branches that are likely to break is better than having them break off. Dead wood is easier to recognize and remove while living branches still have leaves. Protect your shrubs and more delicate trees with a thick layer of mulch. Find pruners, straw, and shavings at both the Snohomish and Monroe Co-Op to help winterize your plants and trees.

Walk around your livestock shelters. Check for leaks, and potential for flooding. If you do live in a flood plain, make sure you have a plan for evacuation. Team up with friends with trailers for transportation. Make a plan for temporary shelter for your livestock. The Evergreen State fairgrounds in Monroe often opens up as a flood shelter for livestock.

Stormy weather can often cause livestock bedding to become damp and moldy. Visit the Snohomish and Monroe Co-Op to stock up on straw bales and shavings. In addition to providing comfortable bedding,
straw bales can be stacked as walls to offer insulation for drafty sides of shelters.

If you’ve used bird netting to cover your chicken run, keep an eye on it during stormy weather. Fallen branches can snag holes in the netting, and snow accumulation can cause the netting to collapse. It’s a good idea to have some extra bird netting on hand to make repairs after storms. The Snohomish and Monroe Co-Op both stock a variety of sizes of bird netting all year long.

As well as securing shelters for your animals, make sure you have extra feed and first aid products on hand. You don’t want to run out of anything during a storm when you might not be able to get to the feed store for a couple days. Visit us here at the Co-Op to get first aid supplies like Vetericyn to clean wounds, and Corona ointment with beeswax and lanolin to create a protective barrier over cuts and scrapes. Don’t forget gauze, Epsomsalts to draw out inflammation, and vet wrap. Having a well-stocked first aid kit will on hand will help give you peace of mind.

With a little bit of planning and help from the Snohomish and Monroe Co-Op, you can feel confident that your homestead will weather the fall and winter storm seasons comfortably. Visit our friendly team to help you find exactly what you need.
